Typically, when a tooth is broken or damaged from decay, our dentists will repair the tooth using one of these options; a dental filling, crown, or other restoration. But sometimes tooth damage is too extensive to repair and requires extraction.
Extraction may be necessary of the tooth is loosened from advanced periodontal disease or oral trauma. Impaction may also necessitate extraction, meaning they are coming through in the wrong place or are crowding surrounding teeth.
A simple tooth extraction will involve loosening the tooth with a dental tool known as an elevator. Once the loosened tooth is ready it can be extracted using dental forceps.
During a simple tooth extraction, you may feel pressure but no pain. Our experienced dental team will make sure you are as comfortable as possible during your procedure using sedation dentistry. Once the tooth is out, you may reduce any swelling by using ice packs and sticking with a soft foods diet for a few days until the area is healed. Keeping the extraction site clean until it heals can be accomplished by rinsing gently with warm salt water.
